9to5 Georgia is proud to announce the passage of the Family Care Act (SB 201) with a 114 to 51 vote count in the House! The bill will now be sent to the Governor Deal for his signature.
I still keep my EBT card with my other sentimental items like movie tickets and family photos. As a new mom struggling to make ends meet while in school and working 20-30 hours a week, government assistance programs helped keep my family afloat. These programs allowed me to be a mom, finish school, and create the life I wanted.
For over 15 years, I have been living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that ranges from mild to life threatening. I’ve always felt pressured to compromise my health in order to maintain health benefits and work. Passing a federal family and medical leave insurance bill that covers all workers will be a victory for everyone.
It’s clear that anti-poverty programs are sound investments in Georgia, and particularly for Georgia’s families with children. We must do all we can to lift up opportunity in our state.

Tamara Green, pictured here with her mother, is a member of 9to5 Georgia. She spoke at the national We Wont Wait Summit about her experience as a caregiver. Tamara is an advocate for her mother who lives with HIV/AIDS. Because she needed to accompany her mother to the hospital, Tamara was fired from her job.
Speaking at the United State of Women Summit was an incredible experience. I never imagined that I would be on the same stage as President Obama, Kerry Washington and Attorney General Loretta Lynch. I spoke on a panel with equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter, to discuss the state of women in the workplace.

At this event, we were all asked to create a “Because of them, I can…” statement, I chose to dedicate myself to educating others on women’s issues and working towards enacting change. Words cannot describe the feeling of having the opportunity to meet a group of folks who are working towards bettering the lives of others and reaching a place of equality in our country that we so desperately need.
