by Keisha Robinson Let’s work to keep Wisconsin’s law one of the strongest in the nation and even expand it Last week, we celebrated the 29th anniversary of Wisconsin’s Family …
Keisha from Wisconsin lays out how not having access to paid sick days or paid family leave contributes to the wage gap by punishing women financially for taking care of our families.
Low-income refundable tax credits have lifted 110,000 Wisconsinites out of poverty each year, on average, from 2011 to 2013, and another 130,000 were lifted out of poverty each year, on average, from 2009 to 2011 due to SNAP.
“Banning the box will remove a huge barrier to employment and provide job seekers with opportunities to find family supporting jobs which will grow our local economy, strengthen our communities and reduce poverty,” says 9to5 Wisconsin member Rhonda Willette.
Wisconsin was a trailblazing state in the 1980’s passing the first state family and medical leave law. Today, Wisconsin has a chance to catch up with the national trend of paid family and medical leave insurance. In an op-ed printed in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Aug 3rd, 9to5 Interim State Director Astar Herndon makes the case for pending state legislation.
Our Wisconsin chapter is doing great work around #BanTheBox!
“As an organizer with 9to5 Wisconsin, I work with a huge population of women who are struggling to turn their lives around; to get and keep jobs after returning from prison.”-Nancy Yarbrough, 9to5 WI Chapter Organizer.

Engaging in the community about personal issues and taking a stand provides much fulfillment. That is what I have got the opportunity to feel here at 9to5. Standing with the community and for the community means everything to me.
Participating in the Membership Drive, I heard enthusiasm from the community makes me feel that what 9to5 does is important and I am glad that I can be part of that support. Change is important and so is standing up for our community rights. That is what 9to5 does.
Like most people, I have never traveled to the state Capitol to testify at a legislative hearing. But I have been a supporter of paid family leave since I found out that it didn’t exist when I was pregnant with my first son. So I support WI Family Leave Insurance (WIFI) personally, and through the Keeping Families First coalition as the representative of Mid-Day Women’s Alliance, a business women’s organization in Appleton, WI. When I heard about the Senate hearing, I blocked off my day so that I could be there to testify in support of the bill.
