At the event, I was encouraged to hear from organizations like 9to5 that are working to improve the lives of working women and their families. I found it even more encouraging to hear from business leaders who are making changes in their own workplaces by providing family-flexible workplace policies.
Everyone has a sick family member to care for at some point – so it’s critical to have Family Leave Insurance or other paid leave so families can stay afloat while dealing with family illness.
Paid worker leave dominated the conversation Friday at The Denver Forum on Working Families, the first in a series of gatherings to promote labor-market reforms supported by the Obama administration.

They include women like Crystal Whetstone from Ohio, who had to move in with her parents to make ends meet on a minimum wage salary, and Peggy Jackson in Atlanta, who earns only enough to cover rent and utilities. Without the ability to pay their bills, these women, and more like them, are trapped in a cycle of poverty.
