This radio news spot highlights the growing influence of Asian American voters in Georgia, and their support for the Family Care Act (HB 290) which would allow workers to use earned sick days to care for a child, spouse, or elderly parent. The campaign for HB 290 is being led by 9to5 Atlanta.
This year was my first year to participating in the 9 to 5 Working Women Atlanta Chapter Annual Lobby Day at the Capitol. All in all this was a fantastic day lobbying and I would encourage anyone to come out with 9 to 5 for future annual lobby days!

“After a year of doing this work, the one thing that came out loud and clear was that transit is not affordable,” 9to5 organizer Zoe Williams said. “Before we can talk about last-mile connections, station safety, service changes, or light rail, we have to make sure that people can get the fares and passes they need to make the transit system relevant.”
David Jones, a 12-year-old with Asperger’s Syndrome explains the importance of affordable family leave: “If my mom wouldn’t have taken off of work and stopped giving me those medications, who knows what would have happened to me. I hope that other kids with the same problems as me will continue to have the same opportunity to stay home for a time and get better.”
At a recent Georgia House Committee hearing on the Family Care Act (HB 290), I was reminded both of how far we have come since the signing of the Family and Medical Leave Act in 1993, and how far we still have to go to fulfill the promise of this important legislation.
